Family Pension in Defense Services is a financial benefit granted to the family of an Armed Forces personnel or Armed Forces pensioner after his or her death. When an Armed Forces personnel or an Armed Forces pensioner dies, the eligible family members are granted Family Pension as per the applicable rules. There are three types of Family Pension in Defense Services:

The eligible family members are granted Family Pension as per the applicable rules.

  1. Ordinary Family Pension
    Ordinary Family Pension is granted when an Armed Forces personnel or an Armed Forces pensioner dies due to natural causes or normal circumstances.
    In such cases, the family is entitled to 30% of the last pay drawn by the deceased.
  2. Special Family Pension
    Special Family Pension is granted when the Armed Forces personnel or pensioner dies due to an injury or disease which is attributable to or aggravated by military service.
    In this situation, the family is entitled to 60% of the last pay drawn by the deceased.
  3. Liberalized Family Pension
    Liberalized Family Pension is granted when an Armed Forces personnel dies in War or war-like situations, Military operations, Enemy action, Terrorist attacks, Any other hostile or operational circumstances. In such cases, the family is entitled to 100% of the last pay drawn by the deceased.

In cases of Special Family Pension or Liberalized Family Pension, a lump-sum amount is also paid to the family as compensation. This one-time payment is known as Ex-Gratia.

Who are eligible /entitled to receive family pension?
1.If deceased solider is unmarried
i). Mother
ii) father
iii) Dependent-Brother/Sister
(If they do not have other source of Income or their income is less than 9000PM)
2.Widow / widower of the deceased
3.Son – Actual, adopted or illegitimate(upto 25 years of age or employed which ever is earlier)
4.Daughters – Actual, adopted or illegitimate (till her marriage ), widow and divorcee daughters are eligible for pension if no other source of income.
5.Mentally/ physically challenged children.
*Dual Family Pension is allowed if deceased drew or is drawing or may draw two pensions from military and or civil employment.
